Demerara defeated the Presidents’ XI by an innings and 49 runs to capture the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Inter County U-19 3-Day title in their third and final round game yesterday at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground Bourda.
Demerara entered the final day, needing eleven points to win the overall tournament and calmly achieved their target to finish with 62 points, ahead of Berbice who ended with 49; Essequibo got 21 and the President’s X1 11.
Resuming on their first innings score of 142-7, the President’s XI were bowled out for 215 in the first session on the final day. Damien Waldron and Ronaldo Mohamed took the score to 172 before Mohamed was dismissed by Sherfene Rutherford for 18 at 172-8. Rutherford then had Daniel Lewis (00) caught at the wicket before Waldron was bowled by Keon Morris for 38 (5×4) leaving Gavin Moriah not out on 21 (3×4). Morris and Rutherford claimed three wickets each while Steven Sankar captured 2-60. Leading by 192 Demerara enforced the follow on and bowled out the President’s XI for 143 in 51.4 overs in the final session.
The impressive Morris made early in roads when he uprooted the stumps of Sunil Singh (14) with one that came back into the left hander, he then trapped Avishkar Sewkarran (08) LBW to leave the score at 29-2. Ryan Shun played some lovely shots on both sides of the pitch before he was LBW to Rutherford for 21 (2×4) at 39-3.
It soon became 41-4 when Nick Ramsaroop (04) was run out idling out of his crease. Rutherford, who generated some pace from a short run, then sent back Kareem Mentore (04) as the President’s XI slipped to 44-5. Michael Shalim played a little cameo hitting five fours before he was caught at the wicket of Rutherford for 23. Leg spinner Steven Sankar had Waldron (01) LBW to leave the score at 69-7, but Ronaldo Mohamed took the attack to the bowlers, he slammed pacer Morris for a straight six before hitting the pacer to the long on fence and smashing him over the Rohan Kanhai pavilion.
Morris however had the last laugh when the induced to right hander to edge one to the slip cordon. Mohamed departed for 37 (2×4,2×6). Moriah who laboured for 59 balls in scoring 24 (3×4) was brilliantly caught and bowled by Morris with the score at 132-9 before Daniel Lewis (01) was stumped off Tagenarine Chanderpaul, handing Demerara a well deserved victory in the last hour of the match. Matthew Shivtahal was left not out on 10. Morris finished with 4-32 while Rutherford snared 3-46; Chanderpaul and Sankar had one each.
