Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) first Vice-President Anil Beharry told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that his Board has collaborated with the Berbice Chambers of Commerce to host the third edition of the Independence Cup T20 cricket tournament on May 25 at Albion.
Following a letter from the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) President Drubahadur informing that the planned event was not on the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) list of approved tournaments, Beharry said the tournament will go ahead as planned.
“This is our flagship tournament and along with the Berbice Chamber of Commerce we have invested a lot of time, energy and funding into the tournament and we are going ahead with it despite what the GCB says,” Beharry, a senior Manager at one of the leading Banks in New Amsterdam, stated.
Beharry is of the view that the GCB is being vindictive due to the on-going feud between the BCB and the GCB, adding that several charities including the new Shelter homeless Children in Port Mourant will benefit from the venture.
The competition include the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) who are scheduled to face East Coast Jaguars after Berbice ‘A’ battle Berbice ‘B’ with the two winners facing off in the final under lights.
The bulk of the National Players come from the city and Berbice and if there is no compromise it could put those players in an uncomfortable position since according to the organizers close to one million dollars will go to the players.
The GCB letter, which was copied to the respective parties involved, in addition to the sponsors, the WICB and the Media, informed that the Independence Cup t20 competition is unauthorized and disapproved and reminded all players, Clubs, Associations, Venues and Officials that the list of approved tournaments in the West Indies can be viewed on the WICB website windiescricket.com.
The GCB letter added that the sanctions and penalties for venues and players participating in disapproved cricket is also on the WICB website.
It added that it was reminding all stake holders that the authority for approving cricket, not on the approved list, is the WICB, which may delegate such authority to the GCB.
Beharry said that after the players and various Charities receive their money the balance will divided equally between the Berbice Chamber of Commerce and the BCB to fulfill their respective mandates.
It seems the battle lines have again been drawn and once again the players find themselves in the middle of it all.
