The Surinamese government is once again making claims to the disputed Guyana/ Suriname New River Triangle/ Tigri area within weeks of Natural Resource Minister Robert Persaud disassociating Guyana out of Suriname’s first ever oil and gas conference.
The Dutch -speaking country’s parliament however made a resolution last week to carry on discussions on the issue behind closed doors.
According to the country’s online news site De Ware Tijd, Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Lackin has reiterated Suriname’s ownership of the contentious region and urged that the government hold more talks to deal with the issue.
The online site said that the parliament responded favourably to the request from the government “to discuss, Tigri, the border dispute behind closed doors.” The agency said that while the Foreign Affairs Minister chose not to provide certain information, it was emphasized that, “Tigri is Surinamese territory.”
During a public meeting in the continuation of the country’s budget debate, the Minister reiterated that the government’s position remains the same on the matter and was quoted by the news agency as saying, “the government has decided this issue with Georgetown resolve, because only a sustainable solution can be found through diplomatic consultations.”
During the talks, the news agency said, matters concerning the purchase of equipment for the
Dutch army also surfaced. The Minister however held fast that the disputed territory belongs to the Dutch nation and the request for discussions relating to the matter to be held in camera was granted.
Only last month, the Natural Resources and Environment Minister rejected the invitation to attend Suriname’s first ever International Mining, Energy & Petroleum Conference and Exhibition. Minister Persuad said that Suriname had included the New River Triangle on their map, reaffirming their claims to the area.
Minister Persaud said that nothing had changed since Guyana registered its objection to the disputed triangular shaped area being included on Suriname’s map; the country therefore remains firm that it will not be participating in the conference.
Prior to that, additional concern was raised when permission was given to a mining company to commence survey work in the said area. Several issues were raised internally and externally.
The New River Triangle, known in Suriname as the Tigri, is a triangular shaped area to the south west of Suriname. Guyana and Suriname have been at odds over the matter since the 1800s.
Suriname considers the location as part of the Coeroenie area of District Sipaliwini, while Guyana considers it part of the East Berbice-Corentyne region. The area has been under Guyanese control since it was claimed by local military forces in the later 1960s.
The conflict had since quietly simmered.
