A 77-year-old pensioner died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) yesterday, one day after he reportedly set himself on fire at his home. Dead is Harry Rukhnarain of Lot 124 Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara.
According the dead man’s wife, she was at church on Friday when she received news that her husband had burnt himself and was taken to the hospital. The woman claimed that what happened on Friday was not the first time the 77-year-old had tried to kill himself.
“He was sick for a year now. He had stroke and the stick that he uses to walk, he does take it and hit himself. I does gotta hide the cutlasses and knives from him. He asked me to buy rat poison but I tell him I am not buying anything,” Mrs. Rukhnarain said.
She added that when she left home to go to church her husband seemed normal. She had no idea he would kill himself.
