Child-murder accused, Calvin Bailey, was hospitalized yesterday after he was badly beaten in the Georgetown Prison.
Prison sources said that the inmate, who is on retrial for the 2007 murder of his 18-month-old son, was beaten by prison warders around 07.00 hours after he set his mattress alight. He was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, while a prison warder was treated for minor burns to his hand.
Kaieteur News was told that Bailey and another inmate were placed in the ‘strong cell’ (solitary confinement) a few weeks ago after prison officials were informed of a suspected escape plan by some inmates.
The other prisoner was eventually removed from the ‘strong cell’, while Bailey was left in solitary.
Around 07.00 hrs yesterday, prison warders came running to Bailey’s cell after he set his mattress on fire. When they opened the cell, Bailey reportedly ran outside with the mattress. He was subdued and reportedly badly beaten before being taken to the GPHC.
Bailey is facing retrial for the murder of 18-month-old Shaquan Nero, who was slain after Bailey allegedly attacked the child’s mother, Bernadette Nero in April, 2007, at Amelia’s Ward, Linden.
In his defence, Bailey has claimed that his reputed wife had stabbed him and the child during an altercation.
