Furniture giants Courts Guyana Inc once again join hands with the BCB/BCC&DA to host Independence T20 Cup 2014 to be held on Sunday May 25, 2014 at the historic Albion Cricket Ground. This is the third edition and promises to be the biggest ever.
It is expected for the first time to be played under international quality floodlights, the same as the Guyana National Stadium. There will be two semi-finals with Berbice ‘A’ taking on Berbice ‘B’ from 11:00am followed three hours later by Georgetown Cricket Association vs East Coast Jaguars. The winners will battle in the finals from 7:00pm under lights.
Preceding the final will be a feature softball match between archrivals Memorex and Universal DVD.
Proceeds from this event will go to several charitable organisations. The two cricket clubs identified for assistance this year are Blairmont Cricket Club and Upper Corentyne Cricket Association. Last year Albion Cricket Club and Bermine Cricket Club were assisted with one hundred thousand dollars each.
Three orphanages, two schools and the host venue Albion Cricket Ground are earmarked to gain from this year’s mega event. For the first time, funds will be budgeted for health reason. The new shelter for homeless kids at Babu John, Bal Nivas has been added to the list of recipients. The BCB and BCC&DA will share the balance equally to fulfill their respective mandates. This gala event will form part of the Region’s celebration for Independence.
At a simple ceremony held recently at the New Amsterdam Branch of Courts Guyana Inc., Mr Stanley McKenzie, Branch Manager handed over sponsorship cheque to Alisa Moonsee, one of the tournament secretaries in the presence of other staff members and Cosmatia Lindee.
He said that his company was very happy with what they saw last year and readily renewed their sponsorship for 2014. He indicated that the furniture giants believe in quality and saw quality in the way the tournament was conducted.
McKenzie wished the tournament success and was happy to learn that so many charitable organisations will benefit from this event. He said that the addition of the new shelter for kids at Babu John to the list of organisation to benefit is timely. He added that abuse, child abuse in particular is very prevalent and is a serious social issue.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the tournament, Alisa Moonsee, thanked Courts Guyana Inc. for their sterling contribution to charity in Berbice and Guyana as a whole. She thanked them for coming on board once again and assured them that they will be satisfied with the mileage and the way the tournament will be conducted. Transparency and accountability has been the hallmark of the first two tournaments and this year will be no different.
Other sponsors so far are: Demerara Bank Limited, Hand In Hand Insurance Company, Raffik and Sons Construction, Sunshine Supermarket, Furniture World, Balram Shane and Jayzee of the USA.
The tournament is set for May 25, 2014, the Sunday before Independence Day. Incentives close to one million dollars will go to the players. The patrons will have the opportunity to win fabulous gate prizes.
