A chanceless unbeaten century by first class opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul put Demerara in a strong position on the opening day of the third and final round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Inter County U-19 3-Day tournament against the President’s XI yesterday.
At stumps, Demerara were 253-3 off 98 overs after they elected to bat at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Bourda with the left handed Chanderpaul not out on 113 and Deonarine Seogobin on four. Chanderpaul and fellow opener Brian Sattaur laid the foundation for a huge total with a first wicket stand of 135 in overcast condition.
The pair started off watchfully but was quick to take advantage on the bad balls and took their team to 61 at lunch with Sattaur on 35 and Chanderpaul on 19. They continued to frustrate their opponents after the interval with Sattaur, the more aggressive of the two, reaching his fifty off 129 balls with an outside edge off Ryan Shun to the third man boundary.
Their century partnership came in the 44th over just before Chanderpaul stroked left arm seamer Gavin Moriah for consecutive fours to reach his fifty. He then celebrated by hitting the bowler to the long on fence.
Off spinner Damion Waldron gave his team the breakthrough when Sattaur attempted to cut a delivery too close to his body and was neatly taken by Ronaldo Mohamed at slip for 67 with nine fours off 165 balls. Chanderpaul was joined by Sherfene Rutherford and took the score to 169 at tea. Chanderpaul mixed aggression with defence and was hardly troubled by the opposition, while Rutherford was put down on 24.
Despite losing Rutherford for 44 and Rudolph Singh (06) after tea, Chanderpaul grew in confidence and executed a number of lovely shots on both sides of the pitch and attained his century off 250 balls with eleven fours.
Waldron (3-63) was the pick of the bowlers for the President’s XI whose new ball pair of Moriah and Mohamed, despite generating some degree of pace and extracted considerable movement was wayward at times.
