Defending Caribbean Individual champion, Guyanese Lennox Braithwaite has maintained the lead going into the final day of competition at this year’s West Indies Fullbore Rifle shooting Championships currently underway at the Twickenham Ranges, Jamaica.
On a truncated second day, yesterday, due to rain, Braithwaite not only shot the lone possible at 500 yards (35 5Vs), but ended the day with 212 points and 15Vs, two points more than closest rival, Canadian Serge Bissonnette who has recorded 13 Vs.
Another Canadian, Alpar Katona is third overall in the X Class on 209 points and 12Vs followed by Trinidad and Tobago’s Norris Gomez (208 points 14Vs), while home boy Jose Nunez occupies the number 5 slot with 206 points and 14Vs.

The day was a challenging one for all the shooters with very tricky winds in very humid conditions. The flags were blowing in one direction while the bullet from the shots when it hit the bank, the dust was going in the opposite direction to the flag and mirage.
Despite the challenges, the more experienced shooters kept their composure and focus which has set the stage for an intriguing final day today which will see the shooters competing at the 500, 600, 900 and 1000 yards ranges.
The skies opened yesterday during the lunch break and never relented which pushed the team captains to meet and agree to call off the final range for the day which should have been 1000 yards.
The captains met at around 14:15hrs and decided that they would have waited until 15:00hrs to see if the rain would have halted but it never did.
In the O Class, USA based Guyanese John Fraser is one point behind leader Aubrey Yee-Sang of Jamaica who has 196 points and 8Vs, Fraser has hit the V-bull on six occasions to date.
Sherwin Felicien is third in the T Class (189 points 7Vs) to leader, Claude Russell (190 points 5Vs) and Dwayne Ford (189 points 8Vs) both of Jamaica.
At the end of the first day, Tuesday, Braithwaite led by a single point (129 6Vs) ahead of Katona (128 6Vs) and Gomez (127 11Vs).
Fraser was the O Class leader (122 4Vs) followed by T&T’s Oscar Waldron (119 7Vs) and fellow Guyanese Leo Ramalho (118 7Vs). Russell was the T Class leader (119 4Vs) followed by Felicien (119 3Vs) and Ford (112 3Vs).
There were three possibles at the 300 yards on day one and it was achieved by Canada’s Bissonnette (35 4Vs) and Katona (35 3Vs) as well as T&T’s Michael Perez (35 3Vs). Also on day one, another Trinidadian, Gomez achieved a possible at the 600 yards range (50 5Vs).
