DEAR EDITOR,
Please allow me to express a few thoughts on a matter reported on by the Kaieteur News on Thursday May 1, 2014 captioned “No evidence of pollution of Canje Creek – Armogan”.
The article gives rise to more questions than it provides answers. No report of pollution of any river and associated tributaries, lakes, or any water body in Guyana should be treated in a cavalier manner. The health and wellbeing of people are at stake. Let me reinforce, this includes children, pregnant women, the elderly and our men and women folk, many of whom are the breadwinners of their family.
The delegation that visited these communities consisted of people who are sufficiently knowledgeable to realize that chemicals released into the waterway will create change in the system. While there was insufficient information to expand very much, the least that could have been done is to conduct some water testing.
Testing should not be dismissed based on the premise that this is running water. You might be surprised at what you find by taking measurements of the physical and chemical condition of running water and the critters that live in it. If all is well after testing then that’s great news. It is better to be safe than sorry.
I am not aware of any person who has the ability to look at water and say it is not polluted. While the tell-tale evidence that may have created the problem is absent at this time, that is not sufficient to conclude that the creek is not polluted. Further allocations should be made to have a small medical team taken to the areas to do some screening. I am positive the ‘know how’ to approach a situation like this exists within the country’s medical fraternity. This team should do whatever is necessary to determine whether these people are affected in any way or can be declared as having a clean bill of health.
The further visit mentioned by Armogan should commence now rather than later! It does not cost much to take a better approach. Take the welfare of these people seriously.
