Shot-in-mouth teen identifies shooter in police line up

The police officer who reportedly played Russian roulette with a 15-year-old boy, whom he later shot in the mouth, was yesterday positively identified by the teen who picked him out in a police lineup. Alex Griffith, of North East La Penitence, positively identified the alleged shooter after appearing at the Brickdam Police Station.
Marcel Griffith told Kaieteur News that she accompanied her son to the police station where she too was asked to be part of the identification parade, but declined. Ms Griffith explained that she refused to be a part of the ID parade since her child was the witness to who actually shot him.
Young Griffith was shot a short distance from his home some two Wednesdays ago. A Cadet Officer has been accused of the act. It is alleged that the young Griffith was taken from his home by police officers who later began to beat him about his body. The Cadet Officer placed one bullet in the gun and pulled the trigger a few times until it went off.
Since then, the mother said that persons claiming to be from a lawyer’s office have been calling the family offering a $1M as compensation. Ms Griffith said, “I can’t accept that for my son. I don’t know what is happening with him. What if two months from now things are not ok with my child? What then?” she questioned.
Ms Griffith said her son is slowly recovering, but his words are few and unclear.
After the identification of the alleged shooter, there should be no reason not to lay charges against the police officer, a source close to the investigation said. It was noted that the file should be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions and soon enough the matter should be before the court.
Social activist, Mark Benschop, also accompanied the mother and son to the police station yesterday. He said that the child has positively identified the shooter and “there should be nothing to hold up the investigation.”
He told Kaieteur News that it is expected that the investigation file will go to the DPP and charges should follow shortly.
Benschop also called on social activists and other bodies to speak out against what he described as an apparent trend in police brutality. He blasted members of the political world, the Alliance for Change (AFC), the main opposition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the People’s Progressive Party government for their silence on the issue. He said that it also appears as though “poor black folks” have no line of defence.
Griffith’s brush with the police comes month after ranks were accused of shoving a condom covered baton up the anus of Colwyn Harding was also alleged to have witness a robbery.
