After hours of painstaking investigations, detectives probing last Friday’s murder of fisherman Cheram Bharrat have finally been able to confirm that the act was the work of the man who was having an affair with the victim’s wife.
This was after the woman, Lomattie Ramdat, changed her story and confessed that she did see her lover Errol Khan, known as Venood Maraj, hacking away at her husband while he lay sleeping in his Haslington New Scheme, East Coast Demerara house.
The woman who sustained several chops and is at present hospitalized gave police a further statement yesterday in which she stated that she begged Khan to stop but he turned the cutlass on her. Bharrat had initially told police that she and her husband were attacked by two men who demanded cash and jewellery before hacking them with cutlasses.
She subsequently modified her story during an interview with this newspaper. She accused her lover of organizing the attack, although she maintained that it was carried out by two masked men. It was based on her story in the newspaper that police realised that Bharrat was holding back some vital information, prompting them to revisit her in hospital to get the truth.
According to a source close to the investigations, Ramdat claimed that she was awakened by the sound of the swishing of a cutlass, and saw a man chopping her husband. At first she did not recognize the attacker since, Khan who knew her house well, had turned out all the lights.
Ramdat said that it was when she rushed to her husband’s aid to prevent the person from chopping him further, she recognized that the attacker was Khan.
Immediately after the shocking discovery early Friday morning, neighbours and relatives had pointed fingers at Ramdat’s lover.
When asked why she did not make this disclosure earlier instead of misleading investigators, Ramdat reportedly said that she was scared that Khan, who was very abusive to her during their brief relationship, would try to kill her since he knew she was not dead.
“She saw his face but she was scared and that is why she was not talking,” an investigator told this newspaper.
“We still don’t know how he entered the house,” the detective added.
On Tuesday police issued a wanted bulletin for Khan who they say is wanted for questioning into the murder.
The man’s relatives who have contacted this newspaper are urging him to turn himself in. Meanwhile, a post mortem examination performed on Bharrat’s body revealed that he died from multiple incise wounds.
“I never see chop like that. He had two through his skull. He never get a chance to wake up,” a source told Kaieteur News.
