A senior city Magistrate yesterday remanded a male sex worker to prison after he was brought before her to face a robbery charge.
Twenty seven-year-old Junior Millard, also known as “Alicia” of First Street, Alberttown, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was charged with robbing a man (reportedly his customer) of his $70,000 BlackBerry cell phone and $10,000 cash.
The accused pleaded not guilty and submitted a bail application through his lawyer but the court presided over by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry ordered him held until his next court hearing.
The defence attorney, Paul Fung-a-Fat, claimed that on the day in question his client was given counterfeit $5000 bill for services rendered, but “Alicia” who realised he was being defrauded “held” onto the man’s phone as a form of assurance for payment.
Fung-a-Fat said that the “customer” instead ventured to the police station and made a report which led to his client being arrested and charged for robbery.
His application, however, was met with sharp objections from Corporal Bharat Mangru who represented the Prosecution.
Mangru explained that about 22:00 hours that day, the victim was at the Shell Gas Station when he took out his cellular phone to use it.
“Your worship, the accused approached the victim, hit him to his head and took away his cellular phone.”
The Corporal said that the accused held onto the victim’s shirt while an accomplice relieved him of the cash in his pockets before they escaped.
The matter was reported and subsequent investigations led to Millard being arrested and charged for the offence.
Mangru offered objections on the serious nature of the offence and the penalty thereby attached. He opined that if granted bail, Millard will not return to face the charge instituted against him. The defence attorney, however, sprang to his feet and continued his application.
“Your worship, even the complainant wouldn’t show his face here today. He gave my client counterfeit money for her work and ran away. Yet the police didn’t do anything. This is no robbery! This is sex gone bad your worship,” he contended.
Notwithstanding the defence attorney’s application, bail was refused and Millard was remanded to prison.
The case was transferred to Magistrate Judy Latchman for report and fixtures as well as the filing of statements. It is set to be called again on May 19.
