Four days after the brutal death of fisherman Chetram Bharrat, police have issued a wanted bulletin for the man who was involved in a relationship with his wife.
Police in a press release yesterday said that 38-year-old Errol Khan known as Venood Maraj is wanted for questioning in relation to the murder of Chetram Bharat which occurred on May 02, 2014, at Haslington, East Coast Demerara.
Khan has been described as thinly-built, brown in complexion, and his last known address was listed as Lot 72 Blossom Scheme, East Coast Demerara.
On Friday morning last, Chetram Bharrat was hacked to death while asleep in his bed, while his wife Lomattie Ramdat was chopped several times about her head and body and is presently a patient under police protection at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
The woman during an interview with this newspaper on Monday had fingered her lover as the mastermind of the attack and called on the police to apprehend him as quickly, since she fears for her safety and that of her children.
“It got to be he send somebody fuh do dis…all body ah talk how he swear he go kill me and me husband…because if you nah do something, wha you go mystic for?” Ramdat said.
This is despite the fact that she is maintaining that two cutlass-wielding men had entered the house and carried out the attack after which they reportedly made off with $300,000 having ransacked the house.
Although police have taken a statement from Ramdat, they believe that she has not told them the whole truth about what transpired on Friday morning, hence they have indicated that they will be seeking a further statement from her.
“Based on what she has said in the Kaieteur News, we believe that she has not given us 100 percent and we have to get a further statement,” a senior police official on the East Coast of Demerara told this newspaper.
The woman had said that she and her husband retired to bed around 20:00 hours on Thursday and they only awoke when they were attacked around 04:00 hours the following morning.
But police said that they were informed by a man who had passed the couple’s home around 02:30 hours on Friday that Ramdat was awake, since she called out to him.
The man did not stop, but returned a few minutes later and saw the woman in the yard with a man who was clad only in a pair of briefs.
“We don’t know if the man was her husband, because he was clad only in his brief when he died, but we are looking at this information seriously. The woman is still a person on interest, that is why we have a police guard at the hospital,” the official said.
Since the incident, police had been interested in questioning the woman’s lover after several relatives fingered him in the attack. They have made several searches for him in the Haslington and Enmore areas but he continues to elude them.
The wanted man’s relatives are however blaming the police for harassing the wanted man’s elderly mother, who they say has no knowledge of his whereabouts.
The police said that anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of Errol Khan, known as Venood Maraj, is asked to contact them on telephone numbers 225-6411, 225-2227, 229-2701 to 2703, 229-2557, 911 or the nearest station.
All information will be treated with strict confidence.
