Leader of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) David Granger has been criticized by General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Clement Rohee for APNU’s support of the controversial United States-funded Leadership and Democracy (LEAD) project and disapproval of the work permit revocation of its project coordinator, Canadian Glenn Bradbury.
The project, which the government has said it would not be engaging under “duress” because of the position by the US Ambassador to Guyana Brent Hardt to move ahead without the blessings of government, has since found support with the combined opposition APNU and Alliance For Change (AFC) since, according to them, it would have benefited Guyanese – empowering them with knowledge of the functions of democracy and local government elections.
According to Rohee, Granger’s recent pronouncements on the LEAD project, particularly with respect to the revocation of a work permit for Bradbury, renders him a stranger to foreign policy and therefore makes him incapable of making any meaningful contributions on this particular matter.
Granger had warned the government of the US “retaliating” and expressed regret for the actions that government took to revoke Bradbury’s permit. He believes that government will have to pay the price for the actions it took and had said that “in this diplomacy it is going to be a juk for juk situation”.
According to Rohee, given Granger’s sentiments, “his unfamiliarity with foreign policy and international diplomacy has once again been revealed. Moreover, his inadequacies as a leader have been exposed as he continues to make irrational and uninformed utterances against the PPP Government in this regard.”
Rohee said that Granger’s criticism of the government’s position poses a direct danger “as it promotes disrespect to Guyana’s right to defend its national interest and to take independent positions as a nation.
“It appears as if it is a crime for the government to protect its national sovereignty. The PPP will not countenance any position which will render Guyana a mere flag-bearing mendicant which clearly the opposition leader wishes our country to be.”
Rohee said that APNU is unaware of how foreign policy is managed and that is realized in their “ability to evaluate this matter in a broad objective and nationalist perspective.
“As far as the APNU is concerned, protecting the national interest appears to be a crime. Other countries in the world have stood up for their right for independence and sovereignty and in this regard Guyana ought to be no exception. APNU’s cowardly and weak-hearted position is therefore out of sync with the reality of today’s world; such foreign policy utterances do not gain traction among the populace who are keen with the need for Guyana to protect its national interest.”
