Avinash Persuad hammered a well compiled 85 for Essequibo at the DCC ground yesterday but Sunil Singh responded with an accomplished 53 to ensure the President’s X1 maintained the advantage going into today’s third and final day of their Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) second round Under-19 cricket Inter-County match against Essequibo.
The left-handed Persaud hit 13 fours and two sixes his 94-ball 85 and added 63 for the second wicket with 16-year-old senior Inter-County all- rounder Kemo Paul to spearhead Essequibo to 234 all out, 38 minutes before Tea.
They were replying to 332 made by the President’s X1 in their first innings to give the GCB select side first innings points and a 98-run lead. The President’s X1 were 112-6 in their second innings when play ended as they enjoyed an overall lead of 210.
Essequibo resumed on their overnight 9 without loss and lost Ricardo Peters who was forced to retire hurt when he collided with the wicketkeeper with the score on 15 and by Lunch were 148-4 on a day blessed with glorious sunshine after losing Paul for 17.
After Lunch, Persaud played an array of delightful shots in his attractive knock and seemed unlucky to be given caught down the leg-side from a delivery by Ershad Ali which appeared to come off his thigh pad at 148-5.
It was soon 166-6 when Peters, who returned to bat, was removed by Ryan Shun. Shun also got rid of Ryan Adams (21) at 196-7 while number 10 batsman Travis Drakes hit three sixes and two fours in a thunderous 28 before he was last dismissed by Vivian Albert.
Shun took 3-18, Alli 2-29, Albert 2-29 and Travis Persaud 2-36 for the President’s X1, who reached 19-1 by Tea as they lost Shun (9) off the lively Paul, minutes before the break.
The President’s X1 then lost Nick Ramroop, caught behind off Wallace who bowled a lot slower and flighted the ball much more yesterday.
From 31-2 Avishkar Sewkarran (7) and Singh took the score to 46 before he was trapped LBW to Akini Adams, while Travis Persaud (15) was just getting into a groove when he played an impetuous cut at Kenaenu Harry and touched a catch to the Keeper as the President’s X1 slipped to 82-4.
Baby of the team, National under-15 stand-out Ronaldo Mohamed (6), opted to pull a short ball which kept low from off-spinner Wallace, who bagged 5-96 in the first innings and was LBW at 93-5.
Singh reached his fifty with his seventh four after being dropped at Square-Leg off Wallace off the same ball. He also cleared the boundary once in his entertaining innings before he was caught and bowled by Harry and his team had slumped to 99-6.
The 98 runs lead was becoming a very valuable asset for the President’s X1 even as the Essequibo fielders failed to provide any real support to their bowlers with some sub-standard work in the field.
Albert and Shivnarine Srikisoon then saw their team to the close and will hope to score quickly enough today to give their team enough time to dismiss Essequibo a second time. Play is scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs today.
