In a bid to popularize boxing, the executive of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) has decided to take the sport to the communities with the added aim of involvement of those very communities. To this extent during last year, those executives have organized ‘open air’ cards in Berbice, Bartica and Georgetown among other regions. Notwithstanding the commendable support garnered from those initiatives, local boxing officials were especially pleased following a large turnout when they staged the National Novices Boxing Championships at California Square, East Ruimveldt May 2-3 last.
President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle, was especially delighted by the response and praised his executives and officials whose efforts aided in the success story. Mr. Ninvalle said that he was somewhat concerned with the attendance and had been toying with the idea for quite some time. He said that the many boxers come out of the communities and he believes the idea to interact with these very communities may very well be the catalyst to the return of the crowd support.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ninvalle said that he was somewhat disappointed that Bartica did not participate in the tournament though indicating earlier that they would have. The GBA president said that he has not yet been furnished with the reason for the pullout but surmised that adequate funding might have been responsible. Ninvalle said that he was nonetheless pleased to see the boxers from the Onderneeming, Essequibo based, New Opportunity Corps (NOC), participating in the tournament after a lengthy hiatus. From a field of 4 boxers they won the 140-149lbs division through the efforts of Andrew Newton.
The boxers were trained by national coach, Wencel Thomas with an input from Lawrence Kellman and Mr. Ninvalle is confident that once they continue training the lads from the NOC would eventually gel. “We will continue working with them to foster the rehabilitative process so that these youngsters could be properly reinstated into the community when their tenure is over,” said Ninvalle.
He is also adamant that local coaches should be exposed to constant seminars in order to stay abreast of their trade. As such, the GBA will be organizing two coaching sessions where personnel from the NOC would benefit. Sessions will be conducted by Cuban coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldan.
Further, Mr. Ninvalle said that his executives will endeavor to broaden their horizons with community oriented cards and plan to stage the next such event in Buxton and Golden Grove ECD before ventilating other venues.
