Brooklyn (New York Daily News) – The mother of a nine-year-old killed by a driver who was fleeing from police can’t close her eyes without seeing her daughter’s lifeless body, the girl’s heartbroken father said.
“She hasn’t slept. Neither have I,” Richard Ramnarine, 39, said Monday — a day after the horrific crash. “We saw the body come out. When she closes her eyes, it’s all she sees.”
The father spoke as Kenneth Palache, 62, of Huntington, Long Island, was hit with a slew of charges in the Sunday evening crash in Brooklyn that killed little Rebecca.
Cops had Palache’s SUV pulled over because he was suspected in a hit-and-run crash when he bolted for about two blocks and slammed into the back of a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, police said. Rebecca was a backseat passenger in the sedan, which was being driven by her friend’s mother.
Her mom and dad were in another car about two minutes behind — they came upon the wreck at Avenue N and Remsen Avenue around 5 p.m.
The parents were there when their bloodied girl was pulled from the wreckage.
“It’s hard,” the dad said. “I can’t believe it’s happening. It all feels surreal.”
The father said Palache’s arrest was cold comfort for something that never should have happened.
“It can’t bring our baby back,” he said. “She’s gone. I don’t understand; if you have a suspended license you don’t run from the cops. He caused the death of my daughter. You get a fine. People get suspended licenses all the time. They don’t go out and kill people.”
Palache was charged with criminally negligent homicide, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, failure to show license and aggravated unlicensed operator of a motor vehicle. He was being treated at Brookdale Hospital.
Ramnarine said that he consoles himself by remembering the last time he saw his daughter.
“She just waved at me,” he said. “That’s the way she was, always happy.”
Dad said Rebecca tended to take selfies on his phone and the children’s iPad. She had just taken one right before the crash.
“I just saw it last night,” he said. “It was like a gift. She was smiling, like always.”
