Saints Premier League activities underway
The Saints Premier League tournament continued with three matches at 2 locations, namely, the National Park and the Better Hope Community Ground.
The first game on May 1st, 2014, saw the Valiant Few labor to put 42 runs in a 20/20 cricket match in reply to a massive score of 239 set by the pugnacious Liahona Pacesetters.
The Liahona Pacesetters won the toss and decided to bat. The opening pair, Latchman Bharat and W. Hussain put on a total of 142 before the fall of a wicket but accelerated the run rate from 9 runs per over initially, to almost 12 runs an over at the completion of their 20 overs, amassing 239 with the fall of 6 wickets. Andre Meredith of the Valiant Few was the most successful bowler taking 3 wickets for 27 runs in his four overs.
W. Hussain was adjudged the Man of the Match with the top score of 58 (3×6, 9×4) at a strike rate of 175. K. Ouderman put on 38 (3×4, 3×6) runs not out at a strike rate of 211. L. Bharat’s 33 (3×6, 2×4) runs came from 23 balls.
The Valiant Few never look comfortable against the steady pace of the Liahona Pacesetters. Wickets fell steadily for 11 overs. Courtney Douglas was the main wrecker of the Valiant Few with 4 wickets for 12 runs. S. Motie took 2 for 16 runs, A. Indardeo took 1 for 2 runs, J. Budhan 1 for 2 and T. Mohammed 2 for 3. T. Mohamed was visible everywhere as he followed up with 3 very crucial catches and scored a respectable 11 from 6 balls.
In the second match at the Better Hope Community Ground between arch rivals, Sons of Mosiah and Helaman’s Stripling Warriors, Sons of Mosiah elected to bat. At the close of 20 overs, Sons of Mosiah amassed a modest total of 113 all out. Billy Basthan’s 23 (1×4) in 19 balls and Rasheed Rohaman’s 27 (2×4) in 23 balls gave hope to the team. However, the middle order collapsed under the speed and consistency of Joshua Singh (2 for 16), Ronald DeFreitas (2 for 27) and Joshua Kuligar (2 for 32).
The Man of the Match was the consistent power hitter, Pernell London, whose 41 runs (3×4, 2×6) and a strike rate of 117 propelled Helaman’s Stripling Warriors to a score of 114 with the loss of 7 wickets. Again, the saviours of the Sons of Mosiah’s batting were equally persistent in the bowling department as Rasheed Rohaman’s (3 for 13), Bill Basthan’s (3 for 14) along with Alvin Persaud’s support (2 for 18) affected the crumbling of the middle. However, their efforts were insufficient to prevent a second defeat of the tournament.
The final match of the day between the Valiant Few and Helaman’s Stripling Warriors ended in the second defeat of the day for Valiant Few and another victory for the Stripling Warriors. Valiant Few’s 98 runs were painstaking acquired with only 2 batsmen reaching double figures, Lester Elliot’s 31 (5×4) from 34 balls and A. Samaroo’s 19 from 22 balls. Ronald DeFreitas’ 2 for 28 and Joshua Singh’s 2 for 21 spearheaded the downfall of the Valiant Few’s batsmen within 19 overs.
Three of Helaman’s Stripling Warriors reached their twenties, namely Daniel Barker (22 not out off 30 balls); D. Mangal (20 off 23 balls) before being caught by Darren Massiah off Don Massiah’s bowling and the Man of the Match; Corwin London (26 not out off 36 balls). Additionally, Corwin took one catch and one wicket.
The finals of the Saints Premier League will be played on May 26th between Vreed-en-Hoop’s Liahona Pacesetters and Helaman’s Stripling Warriors. Two female teams from West Coast Demerara will face each other before the start of the Finals.
