As the tenth Linden Secondary Schools Under-19 basketball final was played, there were some words pertaining to the continuation of this tournament after a failure to attract some sponsors locally posed some difficulties for the organisers of the championship, the Linden Amateur Basketball Association.
At the same time the members of the United States based team of sponsors were on hand to hear for themselves, the difficulties encountered over the past year of the championship which was first played in 2005.
In rather terse comments, United States-based Linden Alphonso, who was Head Coach of the 1996 National Women’s team which captured the Caricom Basketball Championship in Trinidad and Tobago, said on behalf of the overseas sponsors, “We wanted to congratulate the Linden Amateur Basketball Association for ensuring this 10th championship did come off.” He stopped short of what can be expected come next year, after rumours surfaced that it would be the last for the overseas based sponsors.
However, he continued by saying, “I would want to congratulate you as for the duration of these tournaments we have had the same sponsors through to the tenth. Maxie Stephens, Lennox Allicock, Kenneth Chapman and others. When you see these guys say thanks to them.”
Alphonso did cautioned the teams, Mackenzie High and Linden Foundation Secondary in the final, saying, “I would caution you guys that winning is good, but it is even better in the way you play the game. Congratulations and may the best win.”
And the best team Mackenzie High School took their fifth tournament title over the ten year period.
Secretary of the LABA, Joseph Chapman, noted that the sterling effort of Organising Secretary Ashton Angel (Jr.) must be commended along with the Victory Valley Royals Basketball Club which teamed up with the LABA for this year’s tournament.
Chapman said it had been a challenge and he was optimistic and hoped that come next year plans would be to ensure there is the 11th championship with a greater emphasis on the organising aspect of the championship. Citing, there were a number of problems encountered to have this year’s tournament played, Chapman said, it is incumbent on the Association to play competitions at the various levels among the schools which will provide the nursery for the future of club basketball in Linden. He said that was the reason the LABA decided to have the inaugural Under 17 basketball tournament last year which was sponsored by Continental Group of Companies through its Sunburst brand product.
Senior Physical Education Officer Lindley Langhorne was forthright about the problems saying, “I would like to congratulate the organizing team for surviving ten years. I know there have been challenges for a number of years. I have had various conversations with Mr. Alphonso and Mr. Chapman and the Organising Secretary Ashton Angel a number of times. We have had a number of clashes but what we want to ensure each and every time is that basketball must be the winner at the end of the day.”
He offered: “Since we are in our tenth year I hope that we would change for the next year. Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Mr. Olato Sam our Chief Education Officer, we hope that we would have statistics throughout the year, not just the winning team each year, and statistics will be need of players to highlight what they actually do in the game and as such we are urging the LABA to step forward and provide this information for the development of the game.”
