…another club launched
By Leon Suseran
In its bid to forge closer ties with citizens, the ‘B’ Division of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has taken the initiative to launch a youth group in Fort Ordnance, East Canje, Berbice. Second-in-Command, Mr. Stephen Mansell and a team of officers launched the youth group in the presence of members of the Development Association of Fort Ordnance (DAFO). They also presented sports gear for the youths in the area.
Mansell said that the ‘B’ Division administration was pleased to work with the leadership of DAFO. He noted that the youth club is just another in a series of youth clubs launched by the GPF. There are about 17 clubs launched in Berbice, from Orealla on the Corentyne River to Plantation Profit on the West Coast of Berbice.
“Out of those youth clubs, we have three scout groups—one at Fort Wellington, Adventure Corentyne, and the other is at Angoy’s Avenue…and those groups are derived from youth clubs.”
The clubs, he stated, will be managed by Sergeant Newland and Officer Guy Nurse, Youth and Scout Officer of ‘B’ Division, in collaboration with DAFO. A list of events and programmes are planned, he stated. There is no age limit for membership to the club. Foot-drills, cook-outs, lectures on crime and traffic; lectures on child abuse are just some of the activities planned. In June, the groups will visit the other youths of Fort Wellington Scout Groups as well as those at Adventure.
Mansell urged the youths to be disciplined, lest they be debarred from membership and lose out on opportunities for personal and community development.
“The bottom line of youth clubs is discipline. When your discipline is positive, you have outings, trips, awards—you name it—monetary awards—a trophy, plaque, a certificate…”
For the clubs to survive there has to be money, and Mansell urged the parents to come on board by planning and executing fund-raisers.
The Youth Club, he noted, will be responsible for a wide range of activities.
Stanley Jacobs, President of the DAFO stated that the body “is about development…and making our community a better place.” Other members of the Executive include: Colin Caesar, Vice-President and Secretary, Somattie Sayranje and Abiola Craig, Public Relations Officer.
Since its formation, the group has formed two Community Policing Groups, installed two street lights in an effort to curb criminal activities. They are currently working on the naming of streets.
