The experiment to take boxing to the various communities seems to be the solution to the wavering crowd support as residents of East Ruimveldt and its environs flocked the East Ruimveldt Community Centre Ground, California Square, and were thrilled with several action packed bouts when the curtains went up on the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) National Novices Championships at that venue Friday evening last.
The action started on an entertaining note when Republican boxer, Klaus Daniel punched his way to a unanimous decision over Robert Gillis to take their 64kgs Open category bout. This bout was indeed fast paced as both youngsters refused to back off. Wicked punches, though unorthodox, landed as both pugilists attempted to surge ahead. A wicked barrage by Daniels in the early stages of the final round turned the tide somewhat and the Republican pressed on to finish the round punching which earned him a unanimous verdict.
Boxers from the New Opportunity Corp (NOC) were on show after a lengthy hiatus and Calvin Barry, fighting in the 75-80lbs division, turned in a special performance to upset Kevin Mullin of the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym (HEBG) by a unanimous decision. The more experienced of the two boxers, Mullin attempted to make a statement with several ramrod shots to his opponent’s head. Instead of backing off Barry pursued his man and stitched in several right crosses of his own.
Mullin got into stride in the second round with hooks and right crosses but Barry refused to be denied and retaliated with crisp right crosses of his own. The tide took a turn for the better for the NOC pugilist midway into the third stanza and Barry unleashed several straight punches that had Mullin on the back foot. Thereafter, sustained and energetic punching by Barry kept Mullin at bay and eventually earned the former boxer a unanimous verdict.
Barry’s gym mate, Nicko Jodha, could not replicate the performance and lost to Shane Skeete (HEBG) in their 115-119 bout, while Glenroy Smith of the Essequibo Boxing Gym (ESG) turned up the heat and stopped Daniel Gibson (GDF) in 2:55secs of the first round of their 75kgs bout. Smith returned later in the night to win another bout, this time over Wayne Murray (GDF).
Another Republican, Ravindra Bisoondial, also chalked up a win for his gym, this time against Victor Low (GDF) in the Open 49kgs division. Low visited the canvass early in the first round but rose and re-entered the fray after the mandatory count. He was greeted with several crunching punches that sent him back on the canvass where the referee waved off the proceedings at 1:50secs of the 2nd round.
Delon Gordon (REP) then unleashed heavy artillery to Nduka Horatio’s head that forced a mandatory 8 count and eventual stoppage in favour of the former boxer at 16 seconds into the third stanza. Gordon was also required to fight again later in the night, this time against Tyron Hamid and he earned a points decision in that bout.
Dilshan Elcock (ESSQ) was also in winners’ row with a point decision over Johnnick LaRose in their 110-114lbs shindig while Republican, Stephan Andrews, forced the referee to halt his 56kgs contest against Terrence Stewart (GDF) in 1:36sec of the second round.
Lorex Pellew (GDF) unleashed a wicked barrage of punches that forced Junior DaSilva (REP) to quit on his stool at the end of the first round of their 60kgs bout shortly before Kemo Bernard earned a points verdict over Chris Charles (GDF), in the 64kgs class.
Terrence Nero (GDF) failed to turn up for his 69kgs bout and gifted a walk over to Clifton Graham (REP) but Desmond Blair (GDF) made reparations for his gym with a convincing point decision over Dexter Berry (REP). One fight later, in the 75kgs category, Mervin Rawlins (GDF)stopped Sean Wilson in the 2nd round while another soldier, Quee Brotherson (GDF), knocked out Kevin DeFraitas (FYF) in 46secs of their 81kgs bout. The finals were scheduled for last night and those results will follow in a subsequent edition.
