A senior city Magistrate yesterday set bail at $200,000 for a 21-year-old police trainee accused of snatching a cellular phone.
Nazir Hussein, of Norton Street, Lodge appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was faced with a larceny charge.
The charge which was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, alleged that on April 28, in Georgetown he stole one Pantec cellular phone valued $90,000 from Ray Archer.
He pleaded not guilty and made a request for reasonable bail through his lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat.
The defence attorney told the court that Hussein is currently enrolled at the Felix Austin Police Training School and that he has been held in custody for five days; two of which he was denied access to food.
He claimed that the phone has been recovered and that Archer did not want to proceed against him.
The lawyer’s application was met with no objections from Inspector Michael Grant who represented the Prosecution thus bail was allowed.
The matter is set to be called again on May 30.
