– PMTC 1 eliminated at Quarterfinal stage
Two times runner up Toco Youth Volleyball Academy (TYVA) of Trinidad went further this year when they defeated the Southern United Volleyball Academy (SUVA) 3-0 (25-23, 25-13 and 25-22) in the final of the Player’s League 4, Caribbean Club Volleyball Championship which was organized by the Trinidad & Tobago Volleyball Federation (TTVF) and played at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Chaguanas, from April 18th. – 21st.
The final, which was played on Easter Monday, saw the TYVA unit destroying their opponents to take away the $5,000US first prize up for grabs in a dominating performance. The defending champion was Big Cepos.
In the female segment, Technocrats defeated Defence Force also by a 3-0 margin with the scores being 25-19, 25-18 and 25-17.
The championship attracted seven male teams including Guyana’s Champion Port Mourant Training School (PMTC1), the others being Technocrats, Defence Force, West Side Stars, Toco Youth V/Ball Academy, SUVA and Bib Cepos of (Central East Port of Spain).
The female category saw four teams participating; namely University of Trinidad & Tobago (UTT), West Side Stars, Defence Force and Technocrats.
Each of the participating team had at least two members of the T&T National Squad.
PMTC 1 of Guyana performed creditably but lost some crucial matches .They went down to SUVA 3-0 on the opening day (21-25, 16-25 and 23-25). On day two PMTC fought hard but lost to Technocrats 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 23-25 and 20-15). They then bounced back to defeat West Side Stars on Easter Sunday 3-0 (25-16,25-16, 27-25) but then lost to Big Cepos 0-3 in a quarter final match up (18-25, 19-25, 20-25).
After the competition offers were made to some PMTC players to play in the TT Pro League later this year. Quacy Matheson of PMTC is already a guest player for Toco in that league.
PMTC’s coach Levi Nedd, in an invited comment, said he was pleased with the performance of his team despite the loss, citing the team was a young one and the experience gained will serve them well.
Nedd however lamented the poor standard of refereeing at crucial times which affected the Guyanese badly. Nedd also took the opportunity to express gratitude to all who contributed financially and otherwise to make the team’s participation in the championship possible. Special mention was made to Mr. John Flores- President of the GVF, the Guyana Defence Force, Mr. Poonai Bhigroog of Poonai’s Pharmacy, Sain & Sons Supermarket of Williamsburg, Corentyne, Spready’s of Port Mourant, Mr. Vic Seubarran of Universal DVD, the Management of Skeldon and Albion Estates and Guysuco Training Centre among others.
