The man who was shot dead by police while hiding out on a farm on the Linden/Seosdyke Highway had unwittingly given away his whereabouts to the woman he had allegedly raped.
According to relatives, Joel Ross who had fled his Haslington, East Coast Demerara home since April 21 last to avoid a rape charge, was in constant telephone contact with the victim, trying to get her to change her story.
This newspaper was told that the woman gave Ross the impression that she had agreed to his request and even befriended him, resulting in him inviting her to the highway pig farm he was working on.
According to Information reaching this newspaper, the woman was directed by Ross to his employer so that she could be taken to the farm to spend a few days with him as was agreed.
The employer did acknowledge on Tuesday that he had spoken to the woman who claimed to be Ross’ reputed wife and had planned to take her to the farm the day he was killed.
“I was to take in his wife but I could not make contact with her via telephone today (Tuesday)” the employer stated.
Relatives believe that the 43 year- old Ross and the woman had shared a casual relationship and had exchanged telephone numbers prior to the rape allegation.
“But is he who cause he own downfall. After he rape she he keep calling she and asking she to put credit in he phone. I hear he was even directing she to where he was,” one relative stated.
They believe that the woman went along with Ross’ “game” and after obtaining information on his whereabouts, she turned it over to the police.
“While he was talking to her in good faith, she was alerting the police,” the relative added.
Kaieteur News understands that the police received information that Ross was hiding out at a location on the highway and went after him just after midday on Tuesday.
“At about 12:30 hours today (Tuesday)…, Joel Ross, who was armed with a cutlass, attacked a policeman who was in the process of arresting him at Kuru Kuru, Soesdyke/Linden Highway. This caused the rank to resort to the use of force and Joel Ross was shot to his body. He succumbed to his injuries.
Joel Ross was wanted in relation to a matter of rape committed at Haslington, ECD, on April 21, 2014,” a police press release had stated on Tuesday.
But relatives believe that there are still several unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances of Ross’ death.
This was after they positively identified his body yesterday at the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
According to a relative they were informed that the funeral parlour workers had picked up Ross’ body from the Timehri Police Station.
“The body was not supposed to be there. Is either they de leave it at the scene for a proper investigation to be done or it was supposed to be at a hospital,” a sister of the dead man told this newspaper.
They also questioned the location where police claimed that Ross was shot.
While the police said that Ross was shot at Kuru-Kuru, his employer informed that the farm he was working on is located several miles away at Yarrowkabra.
“He was working because when we look at the body today, he had on his working clothes and long boots. But who we gun complain to? He done dead,” the relative stated.
A post mortem examination will be performed on Ross’ body tomorrow.
