Two Chinese nationals who were determined to resist all attempts at robbery fought against two armed men at their Robb and King Street business last night.
About 8:45 hours, the workers of Zhen Xing Commercial Company at Lot 67 Robb Street, Robbstown, a clothing store, returned to their business place where they also have a living quarters after shopping for groceries at a local supermarket.
One man and a woman, both Chinese nationals were shot after they got into a scuffle with the men who approached from a white car and demanded cash and jewellery.
The victims were rushed to Georgetown Public Hospital to seek medical attention. Hospital sources confirmed that the injuries were not life threatening and that the Chinese nationals were in a stable condition.
Police investigators were only able to get a few details from the spouse of the man who was shot in his buttocks.
The woman told officers that she, her husband, and some other workers had returned from buying groceries when they tried to open their door and were attacked by the men who were armed with sharp instruments and a shotgun.
“They ask us to show all the money we got. They said they want everything. We said we no have money. They tried to hit us and we hit back. We hit back hard. Then they fire off the gun at us and go away. They only get one phone,” the woman explained.
One victim was also injured on the right side of his abdomen. The nationals were unable to communicate further details of the suspects as they informed that they knew little to no English.
When Kaieteur News arrived on the scene, one witness Mark Barker, who is a law enforcement officer said, “I work for the man who owns the flat that the Chinese are occupying. My boss owns Central Electronics and he rented it to the Chinese Nationals. The two men came and tried to rob them but the Chinese fought back. They did not give in. The men gave up and fled the scene after they didn’t get through immediately. There are cameras surrounding the four points of the place so trust me it will be figured out who the attackers were.”
Officers on the scene arrested one person, an employee of the Chinese Nationals. The police noticed that the man was standing at the corner observing and approached him. After much questioning they found out that the man had not been to work for over a week.
Given his unsatisfactory excuses and suspicious behaviour, police officers held him for further questioning.
Officers up to press time were still trying to determine the names of the nationals who were injured.
