– Four players hit braces
The Linden segment of the Banks DIH Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ Knockout Futsal Tournament kicked off on Tuesday evening with eight matches played before a sizeable crowd, at the Amelia’s Ward Bus Park in Linden.
In the opening encounter, Eldon Saul’s 12th minute strike was enough to secure victory for Cherokee Park over Classic Six.
It was a riposte response after Cherokee Park had to withstand a barrage of forays by Classic Six, before Saul fired past a host of defenders into the goal as they held on firmly for the remainder of the game.

The following game saw Blueberry Gunners squeeze past Pokerburg by a 2-1 margin with Ezekiel Daw (8th) and Oral Peters (12th), the men on target for them, while Brian Tanner made the lone response for Pokerburg.
Dwayne Fraser then registered the first double in this year’s tournament to lead One Mile/Half Mile to a comfortable 3-0 triumph over Goal Getters.
Fraser’s goals came in the 8th and 16th minutes of play, while Keon Sears had given them the lead as early as the 4th minute.
The fourth game before the break was an exciting affair between Scheme and Wisroc which ended 3-2 in favour of the former. Scheme’s Andre Chester duplicated Fraser’s earlier heroics when he netted a brace in the 8th and 20th minutes, while his brother Al made it a family affair when he too found the back of the goal in the 6th minute.
Orande Wills had given Wisroc hope when he booted in, in the 4th minute and returned ten minutes later to complete a double, but it was not enough to save them from exit.
Following a break in the action, Troy Nelson registered the third brace on the opening night, doing so for Mini Bus in the 6th and 14th minute, to guide them to a 2-1 win over the much fancied Aliku lineup, for which Ryan Fraser scored a consolation goal in the dying stages of the fixture.
After Unity got a walkover from Main Street Panthers, Corlic Beckles became the fourth player to score a double, doing so in the 4th and 8th minutes, while his teammate Jermaine Saul scored in the 18th minute, as Constab showed Exodus the way out with a 3-0 win, while The Amazing completed the night’s action with their 2-1 penalty kicks win over Coomacka.
The tournament has at stake one year’s bragging rights, a place in the national playoffs and $400,000 first prize for the victorious team.
Action was set to continue last evening with eight more first round matches, while the round of 16 will be contested this evening, at the New Silvercity Secondary School Hardcourt.
Among those in attendance was Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste, Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart along with Manager of the Linden Branch Shondell Easton.
