The police have nabbed one of the men wanted in the $1.7M Black Bush Polder robbery which occurred last Tuesday.
A couple was brutally beaten and robbed by two bandits who barged into the house and brutalized them before taking away a bag with the cash.
The couple, Baijnauth Niwaz, 58, and his wife Kalawattie Niwaz, who are rice farmers were relaxing at their Yakusari North, Black Bush Polder, home when they were attacked and robbed by the two bandits’ around 19:00 hrs, one of whom was armed with a shot gun.
The bandits who were said to be prison escapee, Vinood Gopaul, and his brother Krisendat Seeram, called Apple Boy, 22, of Lot 34 North Black Bush Polder had reportedly entered the couple’s home through an open door.
The man and his wife who were subsequently hospitalized at the Anamayah Memorial Hospital were discharged a day later.
After intense investigation the police arrested a man who was close to the couple and was seen with the brothers earlier in the day.
The police after carrying out intense investigations and receiving certain information, raided two houses on Sunday in the Yakusari area where the men were said to be hiding. However by the time the cops arrived the men had hurriedly left the building. They had been tipped off.
The police searched the area and found Seeram hiding in some bushes in the area. However Gopaul managed to elude capture. The police also held two other brothers- Jairaj, called ‘Dera Boy’, 25, of the same address and Davenra Rai called ‘Papo’, 32, also of the same address.
Also arrested was an uncle Drinan Sumraj, 53, of 111 Yakusari Black Bush Polder. The police also found three cell phones during the raid.
The police found an improvised shot gun at the scene. Wanted man Vinood Gopaul who was 19 at the time, of 34 Yakasari, Black Bush Polder, was remanded to prison on a charge of allegedly murdering his father. He was among four persons who had escaped from the New Amsterdam prison in June 2011.
The man was reportedly hiding out in the Black Bush Polder area all the time. He reportedly did fishing and helped various farmers in their fields, but residents were reluctant to come forward and inform the authorities
Investigations are continuing and charges are likely soon.
