Two East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme men are to be charged today for the murder of driver/salesman Bharrat Ramcharan, who was gunned down last Thursday outside of Patsan Trading Services in John Smith Street, Campbellville.
Police, reportedly with the aid of technology used to trace calls, tracked the suspects, aged 26 and 20, to a city hotel the day after Ramcharan was slain.
Reports are that the men were identified from images of the killers that were recorded on security cameras at Patsan Trading Enterprise. When he was arrested, one of the alleged bandits was reportedly still dressed in the clothing he had worn during Thursday’s robbery. It is alleged that the suspects also had the money-bag that they had taken from Ramcharan, as well as an unlicensed .38 revolver, with four matching rounds.
This newspaper understands that there were two spent shells in the weapon, and a source confirmed that Ramcharan was shot twice.
Fifty seven year-old Ramcharan, of Enterprise, East Coast Demerara, was reportedly shot in the back at around 14.40 hrs last Thursday after he threw a bag of money over the gate of his workplace to prevent the bandits from making off with the cash.
Kaieteur News understands that he was robbed at gunpoint on at least two other occasions. However, a source said that on those occasions, Ramcharan had handed the money over to the robbers.
Kaieteur News was told that the salesman, who had collected an undisclosed sum of money from customers, had just stepped out of his vehicle when two unmasked men on a CG motorcycle approached him. One of the men had a handgun.
On seeing the bandits, Ramcharan reportedly threw the money-bag over the fence, and then stood with hands upraised.
The gunmen reportedly ran into the compound and snatched up the money-bag. They then ran out of the compound and shot Ramcharan before speeding off on their motorcycle.
Kaieteur News understands that the shot salesman managed to stagger into the compound where he collapsed. He was rushed to the GPHC where he was pronounced dead.
