The article headlined ‘Overpricing comes about through sole sourcing – Minister Edghill tells IDB forum’– in the April 27 edition of Kaieteur News was attributed to Junior Finance Minister Juan Edghill.
The forum at which the comment was made was one hosted by the Inter American Development Bank and the Ministry of Finance. It was attended by Minister Edghill who also addressed the forum.
However, while the statement about overpricing facilitating price gouging is realistic and was made at the forum, the person to whom the statement should have been attributed was an officer of the IDB.
However, for Minister Edghill to be so angry at a simple misattribution to the point of describing the mistake as yellow journalism; would suggest that he is averse to any criticism of any member of the government to which he belongs.
“At no time at the workshop which dealt with the management of claims and the resolution of disputes, did I discuss, pronounce on or even in any veiled way spoke about sole sourcing and over pricing,” Edghill said in a public statement.
That is acknowledged. And what suggested that the headline was a mistake was also noted by Edghill.
“I have noted that even though the words of the headline were attributed to me, the body of the article suggested that it was an IDB official who supposedly made those remarks.”
We can only conclude that he took umbrage to the fact that his government facilitates sole sourcing and that through this process there is overpricing, especially in the area of pharmaceutical acquisition.
“Any decent and honest person would not hesitate to have his name associated with such a comment, much less a public official.
“For Minister Edghill, a senior public official, to disassociate himself from such a comment leads one to believe that he is uncomfortable to challenge sole sourcing through which the previous President created conditions to enrich his friend,” said Publisher Glenn Lall.
