The driver who caused the gruesome death of 38-year-old Rawle Douglas, called ‘Bitta and Dutty Cup’ a seaman of Lot 35, No 53 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Sunday morning has been slapped with three charges.
Ramesh Singh, 34, of Blasoom Street, Enmore, East Coast Demerara, who was the driver of the motorcar PGG 7994, appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh in the Whim Magistrate’s court, yesterday, and pleaded guilty to three charges —driving under the influence of alcohol and was fined $75,000; breach of insurance, $25,000 and being an unlicensed driver, $20,000.
He remains in custody as more charges are expected to be filed.
The owner of the vehicle, Pertab Singh, of No 67 Village was slapped with two charges. He too pleaded guilty and was fined a total of $45,000. He was charged with permitting an unlicensed driver and fined $25,000. On permitting a breach of insurance charged he was fined $20,000.
Douglas was the occupant of the car which was being driven by Ramesh Singh, allegedly at a terrific rate of speed when it collided with a cow on the No. 50 Public Road.
The cow was dragged for some distance and the car ended up in a nearby trench. Douglas was pinned in the front seat while Singh, who was drunk, escaped with minor injuries. He was reportedly trying to escape from the scene when he was nabbed by public spirited citizens.
Douglas was at some relatives sleeping when the driver returned to collect him and they headed to Eversham to a party.
They were allegedly returning home when the accident occurred in the vicinity of Flood Light disco. Douglas was pronounced dead on arrival at the Skeldon Hospital.
