DEAR EDITOR,
I appreciate your great sense of concern for the safety of the public and for being the consciousness of the country; however, the picture depicted on the front page of your newspapers on April 24th is quite deceptive and wicked. It gives the impression that the container was blocking traffic and precariously parked. This was not the case.
I was right there when your photographer positioned herself to make it look like the container was dangerously parked. Instead of taking the shot facing east that would have given a straight line of sight along the road’s northern edge, she positioned herself to shoot in a southeasterly position. When I asked her what she was doing she said she was shooting a front page shot.
This picture, taken on Thursday April17th, and its caption, are so wicked and misleading. The container just spent a few hours there as it was being unpacked. All the time we had people.
If the purpose of this picture was to sell newspapers you have succeeded, but if it was to protect public safety then you have not done your civic duty.
I trust that you will now stop endangering the lives of road users by promptly removing your containers when they arrive at your Saffon Street location. Your unlit containers would normally encumber the western lane of Saffon Street and are there for days and nights without reflectors and warning signs.
Abdul Wahab
EDITOR’S NOTE: As the photograph suggests, the container was not entirely off the road. The reporter took the picture as she saw it. More importantly, containers should not be using the streets in those areas.
