The Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Saturday wrapped up their annual Officers’ Conference with 141 ranks successfully participating in the three-day event.
The conference was held under the theme “Continuing modernisation with special focus on developing public trust and capacity building through partnerships”.
A statement issued yesterday by Guyana Police Force’s Public Relations Department said that facilitators of the Conference placed emphasis on many of the concerns raised by President Donald Ramotar during the opening day, which included, unsolved crimes, prosecution in the courts and the low conviction rate, police reform, corruption, drug trade and the boosting of the Force’s crime fighting capabilities among others.
Other areas addressed during the conference include, the maintenance of good working relations, and collaboration with the other Disciplined Services and Law Enforcement agencies in the Caribbean and further afield, improved training for ranks, and enhancing police – community relations.
Meanwhile, the officers were evidently highly motivated during the address by President Ramotar as he spoke of Government’s efforts to address some welfare issues in the Force, including promotion.
The statement said the Conference also took cognisance of the address given by Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee in which he focused on Police Reform in terms of its necessity; the expected outcomes inclusive of the strengthening of the Force’s operational capability, technological development and succession planning; the challenges posed and the opportunities created.
Further, in his maiden address, Commissioner of Police (acting), Seelall Persaud, DSM, emphasised that the Force will be working assiduously to regain and build public trust and confidence. Commissioner Persaud alluded to a number of areas that include, the installing of Bulletin Boards at police stations which will carry pertinent information for the public inclusive of the names and contact numbers of senior ranks in charge of the station, prisoners’ rights, human rights and crime and traffic statistics as part of this thrust.
