Today’s Guyana Football Federation Ordinary Congress provides the perfect opportunity for football lovers to unmask all the pretenders seeking to return as saviours of the sport.
They are the ‘Baby Warners’ who have done more harm than good to the sport, but now hunt for refuge under the pretext of trying to salvage the sport from their own destruction.
Over the past year, these cronies and past administrators of the sport have tried desperately to disrupt the development of what is indisputably the biggest sport on the Planet and without a doubt one that enjoys widespread support in Guyana.
After racking up over $30million in debt and failing to account for the expenditure of hundreds of millions of dollars via FIFA, corporate community and others, the stakeholders placed with the responsibility of acting in the best interest of football must know who the real enemies of football are and come together to keep them out.
They are the understudies of ‘Papa Warner’ whose conduct is well documented in the annals of world football.
Failure to account to this nation about the proceeds of the Mexico World Cup switch, the expenditure of large sums of money over two decades and the heavy debt burden incurred and left for the present administration to pay, are all enough evidence to banish them from being involved in administration of the sport.
They have attempted to morph themselves into the executive of some associations with the sole aim of controlling the General Council, but their intentions are well known.
These ‘Baby Warners’ have already showed their hands when they had one member withdraw his candidacy after another member failed to achieve the highest office on the West side.
Their actions are being instigated by the ‘Old Guard’, but today is the litmus test for all those who are sincerely in love with the sport of football – they must stand firm and in unison to do what is right.
The sport has taken a path of development. The current executive has demonstrated unwavering awareness to what affected its forward thrust in the past and has sensibly steered clear of the obstacles, focusing intently on what are the best methods to boost the expansion of the sport.
Starting at zero after inheriting a $30 million plus debt burden and being able to slowly but surely chip away at the arrears in addition to hosting a tournament that every association and team got rewarded financially was no easy task, but prudent stewardship and the willingness to chart a course of accountability made it possible.
It is now up to the General Council to act and do so in a manner that demonstrates that beyond the shadow of a doubt football will be the ultimate winner.
Get rid of the ‘Baby Warners’ they do not have football’s best interest at heart.
