Dear Sports Editor,
The real issues facing Guyana football as it is with Caribbean football is leadership. The exit of Jack Warner and his key soldiers across the region has left room for a new leadership to emerge. But what we have not seen are leaders who have demonstrated an ability to bring about real change and according to Basdeo Panday, what we end up getting is exchange.
For example Mr. Matthias and his crew can no longer complain about what the last administration did or did not do. That could only buy you a few months as the wool drops off the eyes of the masses. People want to see what you are doing and not just hear talk and bad talk against your predecessors.
So when Mr. Matthias gets his scribes to write stuff about my salary and people like Mr. Moses feel he is a big Pharisee they forget I am Jamaal, my name is not Jesus. And while this is the season of the crucifixion the people want to see production.
The current GFF say they are focusing on development yet the national team has not played a single game in two years. This shows they do not have a clue of how football development takes place.
They lack in the reality that Caribbean people have become stupefied by a certain kind of rhetoric.
When people desire power they campaign using watchwords like transparency, accountability and inclusion but when they get power they often become worse than the Dictators whom they replaced.
So Mr. President show us some transparency, how have decisions been made in your new GFF? Has there been inclusion and consultation with stakeholders in the game? Or has it been all about I, do as I say and let no dog bark.
A good leader is able to mobilize the elements and resources available to him or her and despite the challenges, get people to work together for the common good. Football has demonstrated the ability to bring people together in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and even Guyana when the national teams were doing well.
All over the football, Governments and even the corporate sector have used the spirit that football generates, to promote their cause, goods or services. So while a football President does not have to be a Mandela or a Gandhi he must possess the quality to get people working together.
I have not seen people, despite having differences, trying to work together in Guyana. I see bitterness, alienation and the sidelining of stakeholders who can contribute but were on the opposite side of the electoral fence.
In Guyana, Mr. Matthias wants to pay the National Coach US$600 a month and the coach is expected to bring unprecedented success. He does not want the foreign born nor top local based players because he wants to pay players US$10 a day when on international duty.
And the Assistant Coach happy to get US$300 and claim he loves his country. You don’t love your country, you love mediocrity. By accepting this you are not helping the nation you are putting coaches back on the plantation. Can Mr. Matthias feed his family on those meagre earnings?
If a federation has an executive with nobody capable of bringing money into the programme they must either bring that intellect or person into the organization or vacate office. In the Caribbean they give the coaches nothing and want results but what yardstick do we use to evaluate the performances of our administrators.
People who do will make mistakes but people who do nothing will remain perfect yet they will be incapable of getting the job done. As Bob Marley said you can fool some people sometimes but you cannot fool all the people all the time. Open your eyes GT your time is now.
