Football fans in the city are gearing up for the championship game in the 7th NAMILCO One Love Football Classic at the Georgetown Football Club ground tomorrow evening in what is anticipated to be an enthralling finale.
Guyana’s number one club side, Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United who are the defending champions, will be taking on old rivals and another top local club side, Guyana Defence Force in the championships game which has a winning purse of 1.2 million dollars at stake.
A total of $1.8 million is up for grabs in this game alone so the stakes are very high; both teams have promised that it will be an intense battle of the best on the GFC square come tomorrow evening.
They have been the two best teams with an unbeaten run of form in this tournament but one will surely leave the park as the only unbeaten team of the tournament, who would that be, is anybody’s guess.
On paper, Alpha is the stronger of the two sides boasting a number of national stars as well as the dangerous Kithson Bain of Grenada and Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson in their forward line. Both are capable of firing artillery that will down any opposition.
Add Captain Dwight Peters, Mark Miller, Kirk Duckworth, Kester Jacobs, Quincy Adams, Kelvin McKenzie and goalkeeper Ronson Williams to the fray along with the chief tactician, Head Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover and you have a potent line up that can worry any opposition.
Dover, in an invited comment, said that his charges will naturally be aiming to win tomorrow and will play an exciting brand of football.
“We will be putting in a 100% team effort and have been training very hard for the game. Converting our chances will be our focus also since as you know, goals win matches.”
So there’s no doubt that Alpha have high class weaponry available to them but this will in no way buckle the Army boys who have been preparing for a war in a sportsmanlike atmosphere.
They have proven that once focused, they will upstage any opposing side and that is exactly what they are about to do come tomorrow evening according to Vice President with responsibility for Administration, Dwayne Moses.
Whilst acknowledging that Alpha is the top side in Guyana, Moses was quick to point out that they have always given them a fight and tomorrow will be no different.
“We are going all out to win this tournament and upset the defending champions. We have always had competitive encounters and keen battles. The GDF is on a path to be the best in Guyana.”
He also noted that training has been going very well to date and the team is focused, fit and hungry for combat.”
Leading the army’s charge would be inspirational midfielder Eusi Phillips who would be expected to create avenues for scoring for forwards and brothers, Delroy and Delwin Fraser. Selwyn Isaacs and Seon Prince will combine in defence to negate any offensive moves by the opposition along with custodian, Carl Stevenson.
The loser of the battle will walk away with $600,000. Facing off in the third place game are losing semi finalists, Fruta Conquerors and Riddim Squad. This will also be a good battle as both sides will be seeking to end on a high.
The winner is guaranteed $400,000 with half that amount going to the loser.
Meanwhile, Fruta Conquerors Club President Wayne Forde has disclosed that arrangements are in place to ensure that fans can have a fun time after the final is concluded.
Popular sound system Slingerz Family has been contracted for the after football party tomorrow evening.
Forde also noted that the tournament has always been used as a fund raiser for the club as they seek to enhance the Tucville Playfield and Club house on a continuous basis. Admission tomorrow is $1,500.
