The Ministry of Education (MOE) is set to host the inaugural Jump Rope (skipping) for Heart Freestyle Championship for the Primary Schools in the Bauxite Mining town of Linden. This will be the first of many such competitions that will be held countrywide and will be done in collaboration with the Unit of Allied Arts and the Departments of Education in each Region.
The Department of Education Region #10 will have the opportunity to set the pace as the first Region and this would be held during the Linden Town Week, 2014 celebrations where the Top 30 Freestyle Jumpers from the Primary schools will be on show on April 29, 2014.
This competition will be held at the Wisroc/Amelia’s Ward Car Park and will coincide with a Health Fair which will be conducted by the Linden Hospital Complex at the same venue.
This individual competition will see participants being judged on areas including technique, creativity and acrobatic skills among others.
Also on show will be members of various fitness groups around the town demonstrating their jump rope abilities. Jump Rope which is better known as skipping contributes to a wide range of fitness components such as resistance, agility, coordination, speed and strength.
Coordinator of this activity, Mr. Lindley Langhorne, who is a Senior Physical Education Officer in the Department of Physical Education in the Ministry of Education, said that the activity has always been done from a recreational perspective for kids and adults alike throughout Guyana.
But in 2010, Ms. Shauna Thomas of Trinidad and Tobago was invited to facilitate a Jump Rope for Heart workshop with a group of selected Primary school teachers in Georgetown. This activity was then incorporated into the National Physical Display Championship in 2011 as a team competition.
This form of the sport will mark the beginning of individual freestyle competitions where the first champion will be crowned and will go down in the annals of Guyana’s history. Each participant will be recognized at this memorable event which will bring a breath of fresh air to the Town Week activities.
The first three participants will be awarded trophies. In addition to this freestyle competition there will be a “Last Man Standing” challenge where all participants will try to see who can skip the longest.
