“What we have is an Executive that remained in campaign mode since the last Congress,” President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Christopher Matthias told two sections of the media yesterday, during an interview ahead of today’s Ordinary Congress set for the Regency Suites on Hadfield Street, starting at 10:00 hrs.
Matthias, who has been at the helm of the GFF for just one year following a FIFA/CONCACAF-organised Electoral Congress, said that contrary to the talk of today’s Congress being a fiery session, he is confident of regaining the support of the General Council and those from the past regime who are noticeably fixed on continuing to destabilize local football will be defeated.
The GFF Head, who has demonstrated an admirable attitude of disinclination to respond to the deliberate attempts of cohorts of the past regime to entertain the football community with falsehood, told this newspaper that the focus of the current executive will continue to be on the development of football and they will not allow themselves to be caught up in the morass that typified the previous administration.
He said those who cut and run had to do so because they were straddled with the dictates of the past regime and evidently could not get their own way within a structured system.
Matthias added that the whole notion of being accountable, transparent and even empowering our affiliates was met with resistance from those that abandoned their posts and according to him it gave a clear indication of the level of interest they had in advancing football and its administration.
The President when asked about the basis for the echo of no-confidence as being peddled by some in the media seemed non-plussed by the call since according to him a lot of football has been played in the short term of his Presidency, adding that the only other motive could be that those who lost office cannot get their way anymore in raping the coffers and undermining footballers.
“They had their way for over twenty years it is a new dispensation where accountability and transparency is the order of the day and while the few may not agree with the current style of governance it has been embraced by our affiliates,” Matthias stated.
He spoke of those who’re seeking to return after leaving Guyana’s football in a financial ruin, disclosing that with the amount of money that had passed through the past regime’s hands the sport should have experienced real development.
“We are now on a path of rescuing the sport and at the same time restoring credibility among our creditors, they left the GFF in a mess and to emphasise what I mean many of the creditors are now challenging the figures that we were left with,” Matthias said.
The GFF Boss pointed to the Golden Jaguars being owed as a perfect example of the mismanagement that took place despite the hundreds of millions that the Federation got over the period 2010-13.
