The Kaneville, East Bank Demerara labourer accused of chopping his 40-year-old brother to death was ordered held without court bond after his first court appearance before a senior Magistrate yesterday.
Three days after the discovery of Jairam Teekaram’s lifeless body hidden in a clump of bushes, his brother Rohan ‘Janko’ Teekaram, 42, was taken to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and charged with his murder.
The charge which was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry alleged that sometime between April 20 and April 22 at Kaneville, he murdered Jairam Teekaram.
Rohan was not called upon to respond since the charge was laid indictably.
Seemingly unable to contain himself, Rohan who stood alone in the prisoners’ docks asked “Can I say something?”
“I ain’t do nothing though. I wish to say something.”
The Chief Magistrate, however, advised him that it would be in his best interest to remain silent since saying something at this point may incriminate him.
Meanwhile, the Prosecution, led by Inspector Michael Grant, did not reveal the details of the crime. He indicated that there “are still some issues to be cleared up” and requested an adjournment date for report and fixtures.
In response the Chief Magistrate remanded the accused to prison. The case is set to be called again on May 12.
It was previously reported that the two brothers had an argument during which the accused used a cutlass and chopped his sibling to death, and then hid his body.
The bloodied body of 40-year-old Jairam Teekaram with the head almost severed was discovered around 08:00hrs on Tuesday by a neighbour. It was reportedly covered with a piece of carpet and hidden away in the bushes at the side of his home.
