A Corentyne resident who has been described as a habitual wife beater and who inflicted a beating on his spouse after she scolded him about his drinking habits has been jailed.
The man, Rickford Lashley, of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice, dealt his wife, Parbattie Seenarine, several cuffs about her body and threatened to kill her. This occurred around 19:30 hrs on Thursday April 3.
He appeared on Thursday before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Albion Magistrate’s court to face the charge of assault. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment.
Prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Sherrif told the court that on the day in question the virtual complainant was at home when the defendant came home under the influence of alcohol, and started one of his regular spells of verbally abusing the woman.
The woman decided to answer the accused, scolding him about his ways and habits when the defendant got annoyed and dealt her several cuffs about her body.
As the argument got heated, he armed himself with a cutlass and threatened to kill her. Becoming fearful for her life the woman fled the house and headed for the Rose Hall Police Outpost.
The matter was reported and the accused was subsequently arrested sometime later and charged.
He begged for a chance but Magistrate Singh was not amused after he realised that the man was before him on a similar matter before.
He sentenced him to two months in jail and urged him to take the time to change his ways.
