…victims, security personnel reach out to Social Services Ministry, police
Armed, homeless youths have now become the feared nuisances of the night. It is alleged that they have been attacking and attempting to rob persons who frequent businesses along Main and Middle Streets, Georgetown.
One armed youth recently attempted to rob a businessman who was leaving a party at the popular night club, Palm Court. After discharging one round from his shotgun, the teenager escaped. The incident has now pushed the heads of the security for various businesses within the area to call on the relevant authorities, especially the Child Protection Agency and the Guyana Police Force to remove the children from the area before someone is seriously injured.
One of the heads of the security for one of the businesses explained that on several occasions, he complained to the Child Protection Agency to look into the matter but since the children continue to linger in the area even up to last night, he feels that his call is falling on deaf ears.
The security officer said, “These youths are predominantly from the Tiger Bay area. In the day you would see some of them coming out to beg for change from customers and then at night they come out in the numbers. They approach persons in a very friendly way and then they attack. They harass people at Hibiscus Restaurant on Middle Street, New Thriving Restaurant and Palm Court.
“My colleagues have even expressed that they have now made Gravity Lounge a target area. It is annoying and it is bad for business. These children should not be left to wander the streets and get themselves into trouble. The Ministry needs to get involved. Its inaction so far on this issue reflects poorly on it.
“I know what can happen if this issue continues to be ignored. It’s just that some people don’t want to injure them because they are teenagers. Many times we have to be holding back our customers, if not they would go to the extent of hurting these kids.
“I am calling on them to take action and I hope they don’t wait to do so until one of these kids end up being badly hurt or worse, killed.”
Director of the Child Protection Agency, Ms. Ann Greene yesterday said that the matter is one that is being taken seriously and moves have already been made to deal with the issue.
Greene said that a sting operation was conducted recently in the area and 15 youths were removed and detained. She added that her Agency is currently working along with the Guyana Police Force on the matter. Further details on their plans will be released later.
