The City Hall building, situated in the heart of Georgetown, is structurally unsound and would require in excess of $200M to execute rehabilitative works.
This is according to Dr. Roger Luncheon, Cabinet Secretary during his weekly post-Cabinet press briefing at the Office of the President yesterday.
Dr. Luncheon related that Cabinet has emphasized its resolve to fast track the planning of interventions into rehabilitating City Hall following various knowledgeable and expert opinions. He added that the continuous deterioration of this historic structure remains an issue for Cabinet.
While confirming that Government will be contributing to the rehabilitation cost, Dr. Luncheon did not definitively say that Government will take charge of the project. He reflected that in 2012 Government provided $20M to commence rehabilitative works to City Hall. While City Hall had executed some works, there were talks that the $20M was only a drop in the ocean.
According to Dr. Luncheon, at the moment he cannot pronounce on the source and conditions of funding for the rehabilitation of the building. However, he suspects that the works will cost in excess of $200M, taking into consideration the extent of repairs to be carried out and efforts to keep the historical realities of the building intact.
Dr. Luncheon said that occupants of the building would most likely have to evacuate the premises during the renovation period.
Georgetown City Hall is a nineteenth-century Gothic Revival building located on the corner of Regent Street and Avenue of the Republic. It was opened in 1889 and is 29 metres high.
