The callous attitude of the police at Baramita, North West District may be responsible for the escape of a woman who allegedly stabbed her reputed husband to death on Tuesday.
This is according to residents of the small predominantly Amerindian community.
They are convinced that the woman might have already fled to neighbouring Venezuela.
Village Captain, Bradley Thomas, told Kaieteur News that he is almost certain that the suspect has successfully made it across the border to the Spanish-speaking country which he said is about a day’s walk from Baramita.
The woman is wanted for questioning into the murder of 32-year-old porkknocker Junior Brandt, whose body was discovered around 7:30 hours on Tuesday.
Police say that Brandt was involved in an altercation with the woman during which he was allegedly stabbed about his body.
The Village Captain, who happens to be a relative of the dead man, echoed the sentiments expressed by other residents who feel that the police in the community are there just to make up numbers and not to solve crimes.
It was Thomas who brought Brandt’s body out from the Baramita backlands after the police rank allegedly refused to act on the report.
“A man come and tell me that he (Brandt) deh lie down on the road. He say that he been drinking by somebody and he wife juk he up. I tell the police something happen and he didn’t want to go,” the Village Captain told this newspaper via telephone yesterday.
He explained that his All Terrain Vehicle was experiencing some mechanical problems so he had to solicit the help of the police.
However, their reluctance to go to the scene of the crime forced him to beg his mechanic to do a “quick job” to fix the ATV and he eventually travelled to the area, where he saw Brandt’s motionless body lying on the road.
Thomas believes that had the police responded promptly, Brandt’s life might have been saved.
“When the boy come and tell me about the stabbing, he say that he (Brandt) was still alive. It is not far from the airstrip,” the Village Captain told Kaieteur News.
“They might have even captured the suspect, because she couldn’t ah gone far. And besides they would use de ATV fuh go after she because she walking,” he added.
Residents are of the firm view that this is another crime in the community that will go unsolved.
“When people do these things here, they head straight to the Venezuela border. Nothing will come out of this. Most people in Baramita does drink and drunk and do all kind of things,” one resident who did not wish to be identified told this newspaper.
They are appealing to the administration of the Guyana Police Force to take a closer look at the personnel they are deploying to the area, since the current set of ranks there are disinterested in what they are mandated to do.
“They have to bring fresh police and they will see nine and 10-year-old girls drinking and dancing with big men including the police,” the resident said.
