A small group of friends and colleagues, among them the Editor in Chief of this publication, Adam Harris, gathered yesterday at Lyken’s Funeral Home to pay their final respects and for moments of reflection on the life of former Kaieteur News Editor, Mr. William Henry Skerrett.
Skerrett passed away on April 12 at age 85. He was buried at Le Repentir Cemetery.
Born on December 10, 1928 to James and Lesia Skerrett nee Applewhaite, he was the second of two children. He was predeceased by his sister Gladys Reece nee Skerrett and his cousin, the late Marjorie Fraser, nee Skerrett.
He completed his secondary education at Queen’s College. In 1950, he was awarded a scholarship to study linguistics and journalism in Czechoslovakia. He then returned to Guyana and began his career in journalism as Editor of the Mirror. In that capacity, he was afforded the opportunity to travel to North Korea and Germany.
He also served as Editor of New Nation. Years later, he moved to Stabroek News serving as a proof reader. His last job in the newspaper field was as an Editor at Kaieteur News.
He was known for his punctuality and a sense of humour which he did not often display. He was never married and had no children. Residents and management of the Uncle Eddie’s Home remembered him as a highly intelligent and interesting person when engaged in conversation. He was described by those who interacted with him to be a “loner.”
Mr. Skerrett spent his last days doing what he always did, reading and indulging in quiet introspection.
