Agatha Bernadette Edwards, Officer Sister of the Venerable Order of St. John Association and Area Nursing Superintendent and Grade IV Officer of the St. John Association of Guyana passed away on April 14 last after a period of illness. She was 91.
Sister Edwards has been associated with the St. John Ambulance Brigade for the past 63 years.
Born on January 8, 1923 at Aruka River, Hosororo, North West, Sister Edwards journeyed to the city when she was merely a teenager.
In 1951, she joined the St. John Ambulance Brigade as a student in First Aid and over the years rose to hold a number of positions.
During her tenure, Sister Edwards served as trainer for First Aid, Home Nursing, Fundamentals of Health, Care for the Elderly, Ambulance Training as well as Public Duties programmes.
She later held the capacity of Area Nursing Staff Officer 1, Grade IV Officer and Area Commissioner.
In 1966, her contributions to the St. John Ambulance Brigade were recognized when she was awarded the Medal of Service (MS) and subsequently, in 1974, with the Bar to the Medal.
Aside from being a national awardee, Sister Edwards was also honoured by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth with the title of Serving Sister of the Venerable Order of St. John in 1974 and Officer Sister of the Order in November, 2011.
She will be remembered too for volunteering especially in the fields of First Aid, Home Nursing and Disaster Preparedness.
Sister Edwards endeared herself to everyone and was admired, respected for her dedication and commitment towards the St. John Association of Guyana, and healthcare in general.
Many remember her not only as knowledgeable, but someone who is always willing to share information.
In particular, the Chairman and Councillors of St. John Association Guyana acknowledged “with thanks her meaningful contribution over the past six decades” and stated that she will always be remembered for her kindness, thoughtfulness and support.
