The junction linking Ruby and Parika Backdam Access Road, East Bank Essequibo is in a deplorable state, according to residents in the area.
They say that millions of dollars were spent to construct the two-mile stretch of road, yet tar was never applied. Contractors are only destroying the road instead of making it proper, the residents said.
“When on earth would the government get competent people to do proper work on this road? This thing is frustrating. In 2011, millions were being spent to do the road and one year later it gone to the dogs. Now it got to do over again. Is taxpayers getting rob through their nose, average people like me and you,” one resident said.
Only crusher run, sand and loam were administered in the process of road construction. The road surface would deteriorate rapidly following a period of consistent rainfall.
Residents, taxi drivers and students have to endure this inconvenience. Kaieteur News understands that over 600 residents live in the affected area and the majority of these families depend on farming as their main source of income. They are hoping that repairs are conducted in an expedited manner before more damage is done.
The Caribbean Development Fund will now be investing in the construction of 6.2km of roadway at Parika at a cost of US$2M and the Ruby 6.7km road for $US2.3M.
This newspaper was told that the roads are being constructed to alleviate the transportation woes of farmers.
Residents complained about their vehicles being destroyed, causing them to be frequently buying new parts.
