Says CSTC’s Coordinator Jennifer Major
The sport of Race Walking is quietly growing in popularity, both as a leisure pursuit and competitively in Guyana.
So says newly appointed Coordinator of the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club, Jennifer Major. She stressed that the club, noted for the promotion of the sport over the years, had made every effort to restore the popularity of the sport despite inadequate sponsorship by making numerous races everywhere, which has encouraged increased involvement of both the young and the old in the sport.
She emphasized that the Founder/Coordinator of the Club, the late Olga Harry, whose dedication to the sport to helped Race Walking to rise to tremendous heights locally.
Major said there is a resurgence of the sport with an emergence of plenty of young talent which augurs well for the future of Race Walking.
Major, who is herself a Race Walker, announced that the Club recently launched a programme called ‘the road to Brazil’ which is aimed at molding a Race Walking team for participation in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
“To this end more races and training sessions in all areas of the Country. Sponsorship has become an issue of concern and this is affecting the flow of activities in the sport,” Major lamented.
But she quickly added that this will not hamper the development and expansion of Race Walking.
Major praised the outstanding contributions made over the years by Coaches and individuals, singling out Public Service Minister Dr Jennifer Webster MP, Managing Director of Modern Optical Services Dr Jose DaSilva along with the Events Managers of Banks DIH Ltd and Hand-in-Hand Insurance Company.
Major added that the Club will shortly launch a fund raising programme both locally and Internationally, while explaining Race Walking is a healthy Sports discipline which becomes a virtual necessity because as we grow older we tend to become less active and needs periods of exercise more than before to remain healthy.
