John Bhagwandin, the security guard under whose watch microscopes and outboard engines were removed from the Malaria Clinic on Sunday, remains in custody.
The items were stored for the various outreach programmes. The Malaria Clinic, which falls under the Ministry of Health, is located in the GPHC compound, on Middle Street, Georgetown.
In a previous report Kaieteur News had stated that armed men had broken into the hospital and stolen a quantity of morphine.
Reports are that the gunmen backed their vehicle up to the clinic. Once inside the building, the men lifted the items and stored them in their parked car.
From all indications, the men appeared to know exactly which rooms to enter for the items.
Chief Executive Officer of the GPHC, Michael Khan said that the robbery had all the markings of an inside job.
Kaieteur News was informed that the guard is claiming that around 01:00hr on Sunday, three men armed with a gun and knives scaled the hospital fence and confronted him.
According to sources, the security guard reportedly told his superiors that he was held at gunpoint while the men escaped with his personal items and the properties of the Clinic.
“This hospital doesn’t even have a proper guard hut at the back there. Last month was the same thing. A female security saw when thieves jump the fence and she raised an alarm and they escaped,” the source related.
Director of the Unit, Dr. Reyaud Rahman could not be reached for a comment.
Investigations are ongoing.
