A 38-year-old passenger died on the spot when his speeding and allegedly drunk friend collided with a cow on, the No. 50 Village Public Road, Corentyne, at around 01.15 hrs yesterday.
Rawle Douglas, called ‘Bita’ or Dutty Cup,’ a seaman of Lot 35 No. 53 Village Corentyne Berbice, was reportedly pinned in the vehicle. A police release stated that the driver was found to be above the legal limit in terms of the consumption of alcohol and has been detained.
Dian Douglas, the dead man’s sister, said that her brother had returned home last Friday after leaving on Good Friday to go out to sea.
She said that her brother who was the sixth of seven children, then left home to get a drink and returned shortly after with a friend, whom he introduced as the captain of the fishing boat that he worked on.
The sister added that after buying a snack, Douglas, accompanied by some relatives, entered a car and headed to No. 52 Village.
According to the sister, the car was going at a fast rate, and the relatives asked the driver to stop and he exited, while Douglas remained inside. Kaieteur News understands that the relatives told Douglas to be careful. However, his words were ‘ah man’.
According to information, the woman said the driver took her brother to a cousin’s home, but the driver returned and he and Douglas headed to Eversham at a party.
They were allegedly returning home and the car was reportedly travelling at terrific speed when it struck a cow on the No. 50 Public Road in the vicinity of Flood Light disco. The car careened off the road and overturned and Douglas was pinned in the vehicle.
According to Dian, they received a call after 01:00 hrs informing them that her brother was involved in an accident and that a close relative was required at the scene. When she arrived, her brother was still pinned in the front seat.
He was subsequently removed and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Skeldon hospital. Douglas is unmarried and has no children.
The driver, Ramesh Singh, of Blasoom Street Enmore, East Coast Demerara was allegedly drunk and escaped with minor injuries. He reportedly tried to flee the scene when he was nabbed by residents and handed over to the police.
