Government has allocated $42.327M to the delivery of health services in Region Eight in this year’s National Budget. This allocation is expected to cover the construction of health posts; purchase of furniture and equipment; and
purchase of vehicles.
The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) controlled by the Alliance For Change (AFC) is hoping that the Regional Administration would see the speedy execution of these projects since the health sector is in need of development.
According to AFC Councillor, Niem Gafoor, budgeting for projects looks and sounds good but the fulfillment of these projects is critical. He pointed out that the Council requested an ambulance for Mahdia Hospital in 2011 and approval was granted in 2012.
However, the ambulance only arrived in the Region early this month and it is non-functional.
Gafoor said that in 2012 when the RDC inquired from the Regional Executive Officer (REO) about the status of the ambulance the body was told that the Regional Health Officer was waiting on the “duty-free set-up”.
He noted that in 2013 the REO informed the RDC that the “duty-free set-up” was in place and a design for the ambulance was being worked on. The RDC was subsequently informed that the ambulance had arrived in Guyana and was on the wharf.
Gafoor said that the ambulance is a pick-up vehicle transformed into an ambulance. The chassis is rotten and the plastic radiator is loosening. He said that the vehicle is not made for Region Eight terrain and would most likely never function effectively.
According to Gafoor, he hopes that money in this year’s budget would cater for the enhancement of Chenapau Health Centre, which is in a deplorable condition. He believes that the REO is not forthcoming with the happenings of the health sector.
According to Gafoor, Regional Chairman Mark Crawford and recently visited Chenapau to ascertain what is happening in the area. The visit was prompted by several complaints of neglect.
He claimed that the REO had assured him that a contractor was tasked with repairing the Health Centre fence and building but a visit to the area proved otherwise.
He noted that for some time the fence has been in disrepair, there is faulty plumbing and inadequate facilities.
Gafoor said, “It is shocking to see how the Community Health Worker and Malaria Health Worker tend to the growing population in this community.”
He added that the Village captain wants to see changes in the community. He noted that the captain showed him the poor conditions under which the health workers have to live.
