Bail for a 22-year-old labourer was recently set at $75,000 when he was taken before a city Magistrate charged in connection with the theft of almost half a million dollars in car parts.
Zaman Mohamed, a resident of Annadale, East Coast of Demerara, on Friday appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the simple larceny charge which was read to him.
It is alleged that between February 6, and February 7, last at Church Street, Georgetown he stole one servo valued at $45,000, one master cylinder worth $48,000 as well as a gear box valued at $325,000; all the property of Andre Parag.
Corporal Deniro Jones, who prosecuted, did not reveal the details of the crime.
Mohamed, who was unrepresented by legal counsel, made a request for bail which was met with no objection from Corporal Jones.
During the proceedings, the father of the accused stepped forward and told the court that the matter was settled with Parag about three weeks ago, that he paid $350,000.
He, however, could not have produced a document to that effect when requested by the Magistrate.
It was also revealed that Mohamed was supposed to be charged along with another for the said theft but he was absent. As a result, an arrest warrant was issued by the Magistrate for the “number two accused”
Mohamed is expected to reappear in court on May 20 before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
